Hapkido is a pragmatic, effective and efficient 360-degree "Hard-Soft" Self-Defence system that is used (and can be used) by Everybody (Adults, Seniors, Teenagers and Kids), regardless of Age, Sex and Physical Abilities.
It is built around 3 key principles:
1) Non-Resistance (or Harmony) Principle
2) Water Principle
3) Circular Principle
Many of the basic fundamentals of learning Hapkido involve linear, stable and strong stances, movements and strikes. These foundations are brought to Hapkido from the Korean Tae Kwon Do lineage. Application of these techniques enables the Hapkidoist to develop good power and a stable base.
More often referred to as Circular techniques, the soft component of Hapkido involves re-directing an opponents strength, force or momentum and utilising that energy into a resultant technique which can often be painful and result in unbalancing that opponent. This concept is often described using the analogy of water flowing over the pebbles and rocks of a river or stream. The water moves softly around the hardness of the rocks and finds its path of least resistance. The "Water Flow" principle becomes one of the greatest foundations of Hapkido's reputation for being able to use the opponent's force in order to render them helpless or disarm them of their attacking technique.
