About Hapkido

Originated in Korea, Hapkido is one of the most effective Self-Defence Systems in the world.

It is complete, well-rounded, pragmatic and efficient, and can be easily used and applied by individuals, regardless of age, sex and physical abilities.

Used by Protection & Security Specialists

Built around a unique "Hard-Soft" Self-Defence model, Hapkido is often used by and taught to personnel in law enforcement organisations and agencies around the world, including the US & Korean Military Special Forces, FBI, CIA, the French RAID, and various police, military and private security organisations around the world.

The 3 Fundamental Principles of Hapkido

In Korean, Hapkido may be translated as “Way of Coordinated Power”. There are literally thousands of techniques within Hapkido, all based on 3 fundamental principles:

Non-Resistance (or Harmony) Principle (or "Hwa")

Hwa is the act of remaining relaxed and not directly opposing an attacker’s strength. For example, if an attacker were to push against a Hapkidoist’s chest, rather than resist and push back, the Hapkidoist would avoid a direct confrontation by moving in the same direction as the push and utilising the attacker’s forward momentum to throw him

Water Principle (or "Yu")

Yu, the water principle, can be thought of as the soft, adaptable strength of water. Hapkido is “soft” in that it does not rely on physical force alone, much like water is soft to touch.

Circular Principle (or "Won")

Won, the circular principle, is a way to gain momentum for executing the techniques in a natural and free-flowing manner, with minimal energy and efforts.
