Training in Hapkido is not just about coming to Training Sessions to learn self-defence, by kicking or punching a few bags, or doing some locks, throws and take-downs, and then walking away thinking you are a warrior.
Training in Hapkido is a long (and for many of us never-ending) Self-Fulfillment, Self-Discovery and/or Self-Actualisation Journey.
By going through and applying all the Hapkido self-defence techniques in as realistic a training environment as possible, by training hard week in, week out, by being pushed physically and mentally:
Indeed, Hapkido can be likened to car racing. The Mind is the driver, and the Body is the engine. Until the driver becomes experienced and learns to control the car, it will never perform to its maximum potential. When the inexperienced driver tries to drive too fast, accidents happen no matter how good the engine is. When the engine is not in tune, the car cannot perform no matter how good the driver is.
Which is the best solution? A good driver or a good engine? Surely the best is to have a good driver in a good car.
That is the goal of Hapkido: to aim to achieve the perfect Balance between Mind and Body. This Balance will help you in everything you do in life, not just Hapkido and self-defence.
Through perseverance, self-control and determination, along with the correct attitude and etiquette, and with your Hapkido knowledge, you can achieve self-control and self-discipline.
This will help you remain calm is all situations: it is very important to remain calm even when your life is under threat, or when you are facing difficult situations, be in your day-to-day life or even at work. This way you can give yourself the best chances to succeed, survive and/or win when facing these difficult situations.
With of our Philosophy of Mind & Body Balance, Perseverance, Self-Control & Respect, comes our Oath. It is learned and applied by every single Hapkidoist of the Australian Hapkido Association (AHA), and of our Academy, regardless of belt level (from White all the way to 7th Degree Master), and regardless of age (from 5yo kids to 70yo adults).
This Oath represents the Values we, Hapkidoists, abide by.

2) I shall train for the good of society.
3) I shall be truthful, respectful, courageous and a best member of society.
